Yesterday, marked 25 years in business for G&S Engineering Services; a wholly owned subsidiary of DRA Global.

G&S Engineering commenced operations with seven staff in a small office in Wood Street, Mackay, Queensland. The business was formed on the 5th March 1995, by Graham Smith, Mick Gamble, Bob Smith, Dick Hollis and Mick Crowe.  The original logo was a representation of the founding directors Mick Gamble the “G” and Graham Smith the “S” in G&S.  G&S has played a vital role in the success of mining projects in Australia and has assisted with some of the world’s leading mining and resource companies achieve and maintain successful operations, with 5 offices across Australia, and employing on average 1,000 personnel.

G&S commenced as an Engineering company servicing the Bowen Basin Mining Industry. A business built on the founding vision of being a successful, sustainable and enjoyable workplace. Where  people are respected, where the company itself is respected, and where all employees are able to achieve job satisfaction.

The first project G&S team undertook was on Shovel 22 at the Goonyella Riverside mine. The entire stock of tool and equipment barely filled the back of a Landcruiser which Dick Hollis stored in his shed.  G&S’s capabilities have undoubtedly grown since that first project, from electrical and mechanical maintenance for surface and underground plant and equipment through to multi-million dollar mine and port construction projects.

G&S has witnessed many highs and lows and completed countless amounts of projects over the 25 years in operations. However, one of the proudest moments in the history of the organisation relates to the work done off the field, the implementation of the #HANDSUP initiative in 2015. As an organisation, G&S actively promote a mentally healthy workplace, one that encourages individuals to speak up, take action and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness for the benefit of the individual, family, organisation and community alike. The first #HANDSUP initiative is a powerful video titled “I know someone “, featuring G&S employees sharing their own experiences of mental health conditions and supporting loved ones.

In 2016, the “I know Someone“ video went on the acclaim  the Leading from the Front award at the Resource Industry Network’s - Chairman’s Awards.

Following the overwhelmingly positive response to #HANDSUP in 2015, the second film #HANDSUP 'Join us on the Journey'  was also released in 2016 to continue to raise awareness of mental health in the workplace and community.

For the last 25 years the success of G&S has been driven by the ability, determination and passion of its people. A special mention goes to all the past and present employees who over time have become part of the G&S family, Thank you!

As G&S now look to the next 25 years the founding goal of being a Successful, Sustainable and Enjoyable workplace for its people, clients and partners remains at the core of our organisation.
